Indiana Toyota Plant Reaches 3 Millionth Vehicle Milestone
It's hard to imagine exactly what three million vehicles in a room would look like, but that's how many would be stacked up at the Princeton, Indiana Toyota plant if it showcased all of the vehicles it has produced up to this point. Number three million was a silver Toyota Sienna seven-passenger van. The Sienna was the best-selling minivan in America for the 2011 year.
Reaching this milestone is particularly important for the Indiana factory since it had to slow production last year last year due to parts shortages in the wake of the tsunami and earthquakes in Japan, as well as the flooding in Thailand. The plant is now operating on maximum overtime and is one of Indiana's largest employers, with a work force over four thousand and a $288 million annual payroll. The plant produces Sienna minivans for the U.S. and exports them overseas to South Korea. It also produces the Toyota Sequoia, a SUV vehicle, which it exports to the Middle East, as well as the Toyota Highlander SUV. The plant originally produced Toyota Tundra trucks when it opened in 1998. The Sienna was especially easy to sell this year, due its popularity, which lead to an easy reach of the 3 million mark for the Indiana plant.
